Activities: Hiking the “Short Boitzenburg Trail”

Right at the starting point, we can enjoy an impressive view of the monastery mill that is far over 200 years old and located next to the ruins of the Cistercian monastery. On we go to the “Tiergarten”. The history of the outstanding tree population is linked to its past as a wood pasture and the wisent breeding activities of the von Arnim family. The path is lined with oak trees with a circumference of more than 7 metres. We use little bridges to cross the stream, as the trail meanders through the Tiergarten.

At Hirschbrücke (stag bridge), the stream widens into a lake whose shores are home to goldeneyes, tufted ducks, pochards and grey herons. We may even spot an otter, if we are lucky. Find out for yourself, why the huge boulder with a diameter of 5 metres is known as “engagement rock”. We walk on through a beautiful linden tree avenue and soon reach a beech forest called Carolinenhain. The massive beech trees offer ideal nesting conditions for black woodpeckers.

The Carolinenhain that was planned as part of the castle grounds by Peter Josef Lenné, is dotted with sights: the burial site of the von Arnim family, multiple temples, memorial stones and even a cemetery for the Count's hunting dogs. We enjoy another view of the lakes, before we continue across Fasanenbrücke (pheasants bridge) and into Fasanengarten (pheasants garden) with its massive beech and oak trees, kingfishers, marsh harriers and beavers. The obelisk points us in the direction of the village. The castle will appear like something from a fairy tale.

Each participant gets a pair of binoculars and a rain poncho to use during the tour. Identification books, maps and information materials are also provided.

Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Start/finish: Boitzenburg, inn carpark

Activities: Hiking the “Long Boitzenburg Trail”

The “Long Boitzenburg Trail” covers mostly the forests of the hilly moraine landscape. There are also beautiful views for hikers to enjoy. The village Naugarten with its lake of the same name is located half way. Take a dip in the lake, or have a rest and a meal in “Hof Kokurin” by the lakeshore. We walk on along a dirt track. It is lined with willows and fruit trees and takes us past beautiful secluded farms and into Boitzenburg’s Tiergarten. It is an ancient wood pasture with massive oak trees whose trunks have circumferences of more than 7 metres. This is where the trail meets the “Short Boitzenburg Trail”.

Duration: 6 to 8 hours

Start/finish: Boitzenburg, carpark at the monastery mill
