The historic sacral structure with its two towers reaching towards the skies can be seen from afar. For 800 years now, the village church in Willmersdorf has been a striking landmark in Werneuchen. However, things did not always go very smoothly for the church with its rich history. Following a devastating fire in the late 19th century, the structure had to be re-built almost entirely, giving rise to the construction of the characteristic twin spires. Not only locals and visitors are captivated by the particular charm of the village church that was built between 1225 and 1250. The location managers of the television station ZDF chose the area surrounding the church in Willmersdorf as the main shooting location for a widely praised literary adaptation.

The team around the director Matti Geschonneck spent around 70 days shooting in Brandenburg, to create the three-part ZDF mini series ‘Unterleuten – Das zerrissene Dorf’ (‘Unterleuten – the torn village’). For most of its activities, the team was based in Werneuchen’s district Willmersdorf, where various scenes of the gripping television drama were shot. The mini series that is based on Juli Zeh’s novel of the same title, revolves around the village church with its two towers that is shown repeatedly. After all, the home of Rudolf Gombrowski is located just across the street from the church. He is the manager of the agricultural enterprise Ökologika and he represents the true centre of power in the village. The three-part series deals with the struggle for power between Gombrowski and his opponent Kron, who are irreconcilable adversaries. The reason for this is not only their past, but also the construction of a wind farm that divides the village. 

In addition to the stunning village church in Willmersdorf, visitors to the Barnimer Land region can discover many other shooting locations. The village ‘Unterleuten’ as shown in the series, is really made up of about 20 locations across Brandenburg that were seamlessly combined in the literary adaptation. Further places in the Barnimer Land region, where visitors can discover ‘Unterleuten’, include the villages Biesenthal, Börnicke, Hohenfinow and Wandlitz. A day out with a long hike or bicycle tour is a great way to explore the region’s cinematic role. The popular ‘66-Lakes Hiking Trail’, for example, runs through the region and past interesting woodlands, shorelines and structures.
