Schöpfurt Lock in its current form was built in 1876 – originally with two lock chambers, one of which was filled in in 1914. The village of Finowfurt cane into existence when the two medieval villages of Schöpfurt and Steinfurt joined together. From here, Elector Joachim Friedrich planned to build the first Finow Canal from 1604.

Up until 1997, the future of the Finow Canal was uncertain. In 1999, Euro 20 million was spent on renovating the canal and locks, which are now exclusively available to pleasure boats, sporting boats and passenger boat cruises.
