Stecher Lock was first built in 1749 and rebuilding started in 1860; the lock in its current form was completed in 1877. In 1912, the upper and lower gated were rebuilt and a weir was built into the south lock in 1958. The lift was mechanised in 1968. The lock was closed from 1992 and only came back into operation in 1998 following repairs.
