The walk begins and ends at Königs Wusterhausen station and leads via Kirchsteig towards Neue Mühle in the direction of “Klein Venedig” (Little Venice). This little gem can also be explored via a marked hiking trail. The circular trail, which is laid out partly as a nature trail, runs through the zoo (Tiergarten) from which it takes its name, which was once used as a hunting area by Frederick William I. The oaks in the woodland area, which are over 250 years old, are probably the last vestiges of this time.

Length: 7 kilometres / 2-3 hours

Start/finish: Königs Wusterhausen station

Route marking: green deciduous tree on white background

How to get there: Public transport: Königs Wusterhausen: Regional train RE, RB, S-Bahn

Route: Königs Wusterhausen station - Storkower Strasse - Kirchsteig - Fliederweg - Storkower Strasse - Am Güterbahnhof - Waldpfad (forest path) - Lake Krebssee - meadow orchard -  Spukbrücke (bridge) - Tiergarten (zoo) - Storkower Strasse - Lake Krimmnicksee - Uferweg path - Husareneck - River Staabe - Tiergartenstrasse - Storkower Strasse - Spukbrücke (bridge) - An der Forst - Kirchsteig - Königs Wusterhausen station (7.5 kilometres)

Tour description: The path leads mostly along the shores of the River Staabe and Lake Krimmnicksee on forest paths that are easy to walk on. The idyllic “Husareneck” headland that separates the two stretches of water is particularly worth mentioning. According to legend, a Hussar was able to survive here during the Napoleonic Wars by swimming from the peninsula to the opposite bank.  Amongst the most eye-catching features are the wooden sculptures created by chainsaw carvers that welcome walkers at regular intervals. After the dedication of two more sculptures in August 2019, visitors can now admire 10 works of art along the 7 kilometre circular trail. Next to every figure there is a panel providing information about the relevant sculpture, which is typical of the region.

Points of interest along the route:
  • Königs Wusterhausen station
  • Bahnhofstrasse Königs Wusterhausen with turn-of-the-century town houses
  • Neue Mühle lock
  • Meadow orchard, nature trail
  • Spukbrücke bridge
  • Husareneck
