The meadow orchard region Hohenleipisch-Döllingen is home to the Pomological Demonstration and Teaching Garden. More than 400 different fruit trees and bushes from great-grandma’s time haven been growing on the three hectares big site, since its creation in 2000. Names such as “red-streaked yellow sheep’s nose” are living proof of the fact that many of these varieties have disappeared from modern gardens. In addition to apples, cherries and plums as the main types of fruit, supplementary fruit including nuts, quinces and peaches is also grown at the pomological garden. This diversity of traditional and local fruit varieties is unique. In spring, visitors can experience a sea of blossoms, and a range of fruit can be tasted in autumn.

The pomological garden’s mission is to counteract the loss of diversity and to preserve these old varieties for the future. Great importance is attached to regional varieties in this context, which have proven to be durable and a good match for the local conditions. Furthermore, visitors to the pomological garden can see how farming land was used as “fruit fields” in the past.

The garden illustrates how fruit farming used to take place in the meadow orchard area around Döllingen, Hohenleipisch and Kraupa. Nature conservation is therefore combined with aspects of environmental education and cultural history. The “Pomo Garden” is also intended as a tourist attraction that promotes regional, organic quality fruit grown in meadow orchards.

Another way to support the Pomological Demonstration and Teaching Garden is to sponsor a tree.
