Composing brothers from Wahrenbrück

The agricultural village of Wahrenbrück (Saxon until 1815 and then Prussian) is the birthplace of the important composers Johann Gottlieb (1703-71) and Carl Heinrich Graun (1704-59). Both worked at the Court Chapel close to Crown Prince Frederick II in Neuruppin, then at his Rheinsberg Court, and later in Berlin and Potsdam. The older brother served the king as the Concert Master, the younger as the Master of the Court Chapel. Many compositions were performed at the court of Frederick II.

In the footsteps of the Graun brothers

A monument to the composer Carl Heinrich Graun, a bronze bust on a high plinth created in 1869, stands at the Graunplatz square in Wahrenbrück. The baptismal church of the Graun brothers is very close by. Some streets in Uebigau-Wahrenbrück are still shaped by two-storey half-timbered houses dating as far back as the late-18th century. Life at the time of Frederick II can still be experienced in the Historic Mill in Wahrenbrück.
