The origins of the historic complex, built on an artificially created mound, date back to the 8th century. It is still not clear today whether it dates back to a Slavic fortification or is an early German substructure. Located at the intersection of the Elbe, Saale and Fläming Cycle Paths, anyone interested in history in Walternienburg is sure to be intrigued by the keep with its half-timbered top dating back to the 18th century, parts of the ring wall and also the preserved vaulted cellar. The former wall and moat system of the moated castle is still easy to identify. The moat was fed by the nearby River Nuthe. The castle was still lived in after the Second World War. The actual castle building itself increasingly fell into disrepair after the 1970s and was demolished in 1988. Today, the castle is home to a satellite office of the Zerbst/Anhalt Registry Office and there is also a market and party barn for events.
