This fieldstone church, built between 1200 and 1230, is one of the oldest churches in the district of Wittenberg, and was even a place of worship for Martin Luther himself. It was the only stone building in the former farming village all the way into the seventeenth century. Apollensdorf is now a part of the town of Wittenberg, and is located right by the River Elbe and the Elbe Cycle Path. The church has been maintained in its original Romantic style, including the round-arch doorway, the priest’s portal and the window in the apse. As with most churches in the region, the remaining windows were added in the late seventeenth century to let more light into the church building. At the same time the church was given a Baroque interior that today shines like new. The altarpiece and the oil painting of Jesus bearing the cross are particularly striking. The columns entwined with vine leaves form a worthy frame around the painting.
