There are two very longstanding town landmarks on the market: the Roland and the Butterjungfer (“Butter Maiden”), who has watched over the city’s market rights for centuries. Symbolising the freedom of the town, the Roland has stood on the market square since 1385, first made of wood and then, from 1445 onwards, made of sandstone. This is the third oldest Roland in Germany.

The Tuscan fountain nearby dates back to the time when there was no running water here. Of the many richly decorated town houses that were once typical of the square, only a few remained after the hail of bombs on 16 April 1945.

The ruins of the town church of St. Nicolai, once the largest hall-type church in Anhalt, still dominate the market square to this day. Since 1991, an association has taken care of preservation measures and the use of the church ruins.

In the immediate vicinity is the church of St. Trinitatis, consecrated in 1696. The Baroque central building was built according to plans drawn up by Dutch architect Cornelis Ryckwaert, who was also involved in the construction of the palace.
