When big black letters announce the promising film title on the glowing white screen and the smell of fresh popcorn is in the air, the next screening is about to happen. This is the case in Kleinmachnow to, where a cinema steeped in tradition and full of memories awaits visitors at “Neue Kammerspiele”. Since 1938 the cinema on Karl-Marx-Strasse has been inviting guests to take a seat on the comfortable chairs, lean back and enjoy the cinematic action on the big screen. One particular audience member also had this in mind on a balmy summer night when he sat down in the back row of the big cinema auditorium. Because a little while later the auditorium was chosen and converted into a film crime scene.

The twelve-part series “Blutige Anfänger” (Bloody Beginners) was about five young trainee police officers during their obligatory semester of training. The five friends go straight from the auditorium to the crime scene and step back into everyday police life with real murders. One of the murders also takes place at “Kino Lupe”, the name of the Kleinmachnow cinema in the ZDF production. The show was filmed almost everywhere: outside the cinema and in the auditorium, in the foyer and in the corridors. Enough space to investigate clues in the tried and tested series format.

The suspense also continued just a kilometre away. Hollywood came to Ginsterheide for the thriller “Without Remorse”. In the film about CIA agent John Terrence Kelly, a Kleinmachnow house was turned into an American villa with Halloween decorations. The film crew involved 200 people who filmed the novel of the same name by Tom Clancy in Babelsberg, Berlin and Kleinmachnow.

For anyone who wants to see Kleinmachnow’s cinema steeped in history, a visit to the Kammerspiele and the in-house “Schröders” restaurant is recommended. In addition to showing films, regular cultural events such as readings, music and theatre events also take place here. There is also a varied children’s programme for the little ones.
