Hortus Terrigenus means something along the lines of “The garden grown from the soil" and is meant to imply that it is inherently an object of natural beauty. It is situated in the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park with views over the Glauer hills, not far from the River Nuthe. It is directly adjacent to a natural monument, the historic remains of the Nuthe Castle in Beuthen, one of many castles built along the River Nuthe. It is a refuge for many endangered species of animals and plants. The landscape garden with its old four-sided courtyard is around three hectares in size. In terms of its diversity, it partly reflects the surrounding countryside, the Nuthetal-Beelitzer Sander nature reserve and the Nuthe-Nieplitz-Niederung lowland nature reserve. A large insect and flower garden and a meadow orchard have also been planted. Visitors can learn more about ecological interrelationships and get hints and ideas for their own gardens at events and guided tours in the gardens. The information barn provides lots of useful information on nature as well as serving coffee and cake.

The Hortus Terrigenus e.V. is a registered non-profit association dedicated to nature conservation and environmental education. The association is a cooperation partner of the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park, a member of the Naturgarten e.V., the Hortus Network, and the Network of Peat-free Gardeners initiated by NABU (the German environmental organisation). As a member of the Hortus Network, the project was presented with an award by the UN Biodiversity Convention in 2019.
