The cherry blossom avenue, initiated by the Japanese broadcasting corporation TV-Asahi, is situated directly on the former border strip of land between Teltow and Berlin-Lichterfelde. For a few weeks every year, the 1.5-kilometre long strip of green is transformed into a sea of pink. Over 1,000 flowering cherry trees line the Mauerweg, the course of the former GDR wall encircling West Berlin, transforming any walk here into a very special experience. The cherry blossom is celebrated every year at the end of April with a big festival known as Hamami, the cherry blossom festival.

More about the history behind the cherry blossom avenue can also be found on panels along the road. In 1990, a Japanese television station initiated a big fund-raising campaign, which raised around one million euros. The money was used to plant more than 9,000 trees in Berlin and Brandenburg, some 1,100 of them along the former strip of the Berlin Wall between Teltow and Berlin-Lichterfelde. According to Japanese tradition, the cherry blossoms are supposed to bring peace and tranquillity to the hearts of the people. However, at other times of the year, the Mauerweg, the former route of the Berlin Wall, is also a great destination for a day out, whether for a walk, picnic or just to chill and unwind. 

Construction update: A two-kilometre section of the Berlin Wall Trail between Japaneck and Lichterfelder Allee is being renovated until December 2025. For safety reasons, the area will be completely closed to the public during the construction period.
