In an attempt to overcome the severe shortage of affordable housing, the city of Dessau commissiones Walter Gropius in 1926 with the design and planning of the Dessau-Törten Housing Estate. The estate was an experimentation site to find solutions for cost-effective mass housing. The estate of terraced houses were built over three phases of construction coming up to 314 terraced houses in 1945 with floor spaces measuring from 57 to 75 square meters. Each house had its own kitchen garden measuring from 350 to 400 square to grow vegetables and practice animal husbandry, thus promoting self-sufficiency. On the estate grounds today there are 2 houses that have been reconstructed that can be visited to get a glimpse into the original Bauhaus period.

The very prominent Konsum Building in the middle of the Törten Housing Estate was built in 1928 by Gropius. The flat-roofed section was intended to house a shopping centre while the five-storey block contains staff rooms, flats and common rooms. The Konsum Building was restored in the 1990s serves today as a central Info-point for the Törten Estate. It also hosts a permanent exhibition on the history of the settlement.
