Self-produced electricity, self-produced heat: Feldheim is Germany’s first energy self-sufficient energy village. Every year, thousands of interested visitors travel to the village from all over the world to learn about this bold future-centric project. Whether you opt to climb into the nacelle of a wind turbine, view the huge rotor blades of wind turbines at close quarters, or explore a biogas plant or a solar and wind farm linked to Europe’s largest regulating power plant: renewable energy sources are hands-on in Feldheim.

In effect, Feldheim, a village district of the town of Treuenbrietzen, with 130 inhabitants, and just 60 kilometres from the capital city of Berlin, is just a normal Brandenburg village. Were it not for the crucial issue of its energy supply. Feldheim is not supplied with energy - rather Feldheim supplies energy and does so with one hundred percent energy from renewable sources.

The village made headlines when it declared its energy self-sufficiency in 2010. In an unprecedented project funded by the European Union, it had received wind turbines, electricity storage, biogas plant, woodchip-based heating system and solar farm. Now Feldheim generates so much energy that it is able to feed back the majority of it.

The "Neue Energien Forum Feldheim", housed in the former "Zur Linde" inn, tells this incredible story: with informative presentations, guided tours of the village, permanent and special exhibitions as well as student project days. It gives interested parties the opportunity to take a peek behind doors that are normally closed. Students and schoolchildren can design their own bioenergy village in a board game or experiment with self-produced biogas. And sometimes the Forum even serves up snacks from its solar-powered oven.

Tips: 
  • The 13-kilometre "Energy Tour" is perfect for active cycling and hiking visitors. Feldheim lies on the Way of St James and is only a stone’s throw from the Tour Brandenburg, one of Germany’s longest cycle paths. 
  • The “Neue Energien Forum Feldheim” renewable energies centre opens its facilities to offer exciting experiences every year to mark the German “Renewable Energy Day”.
