The local history museum in Treuenbrietzen is housed in what was originally a tower on the wall of the town. It was first mentioned in 1352 as the Chapel to the Holy Spirit. The building served as a place of worship for poor craftsmen and travellers. In the 15th/16th century, a brick façade was added to the front of the circular building. After the Thirty Years’ War the Chapel to the Holy Spirit fell into disrepair and was left as a ruin for many years.

The ruin was to have been turned into a memorial in 1872, a measure banned by the monument protection authority. It was not until 1936 that the ruin was extended. It was given a half-timbered floor and a conical roof.

Since then, the building has housed the collections of Karl Reichhelm and Oskar Brachwitz. It opened as a local history museum in 1939.

It houses exhibitions showing evidence of primal and early history, the local history of the town and its crafts. It also provides information on traditional societies and famous figures born in Treuenbrietzen, as well as special exhibitions

The entire building was reconstructed between 1977 and 1981. The museum was returned to its designated purpose in April 1981. In 1991, the museum was fitted with modern heating and plumbing facilities and new interior fit-out. This made it possible to use the building for special exhibitions on painting, graphics and photography, hold concert evenings and other cultural events.
