The Melanchthon House, built in a renaissance style in 1536, is one of the most beautiful town houses in Wittenberg. Elector John Frederick had a residence built for the humanist and reformist Philip Melanchthon and his family. The Melanchthon House has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

The new build beside it features a permanent exhibition, ‘Philip Melanchthon – Life – Work – Impact’, showing how the family lived. Manuscripts, prints, original documents and an extensively restored portrait of Melanchthon testify to his pivotal role in the Reformation and in the development of Protestantism.

Children receive a cast-iron key that opens chests, cabinets and hidden games, making the search for historical gems interesting for younger children too. Melanchthon’s ten-year-old daughter Magdalena gives children an audiovisual tour of Reformation history as well as her family’s day-to-day life.
