Dessau residential palace is the previous west wing of a multi-winged castle complex in the historic town centre of Dessau. The so-called Johannbau was built from 1528 to 1533 on the remains of a previous medieval structure and is one of the first and most significant castle building of the German Early Renaissance. In 1945, the east and south wings were almost completely destroyed in an air raid. They were later blown up. The heavily damaged Johannbau was preserved as ruins and the badly needed roof was only built in 1957. Landestheater Dessau used parts of the ruins to store sets. The preserved building was restored to its original state retaining as much of the original structure as possible in 1990, with a vaulted arch gable as well as the original tower cupola. How the interior spaces were divided up is, unfortunately, no longer known as these were completely lost when it was destroyed.

Since August 2005, Dessau Museum of Town History and its exhibits are housed in the Johannbau. The castle can be viewed as part of a museum visit.
