Two waterways pass through the historic town centre, namely Brandenburg Lower Havel and the Brandenburg Town Canal. Pass by the banks of the three medieval town centres of Altstadt, Neustadt and Dominsel on a round tour of the town centre with fantastic views of important monumental buildings. Extension: If you decide to extend your tour via the suburban lock, simply stay on Brandenburg’s Lower Havel via Lake Kleiner Beetzsee to the Silo Canal, turn right to the suburban lock and continue along the Lower Havel waterway to the next turn right onto the town canal. A connecting tour is possible, for example via Lake Kleiner Beetzsee and the suburban lock (about 5.5 kilometres and more). The round tour can of course begin from a different starting point. There are lots of canoe rentals in Brandenburg an der Havel.

Length/Duration: 5 kilometres (two to four hours)

Start/Finish: Mühlendamm - Brandenburg Town Canal - Brandenburg Lower Havel - Näthewinde. The tour can also start from other locations, as there are numerous boat rentals and put-ins in Brandenburg.

How to get there:
  • Public transport: From Berlin Zoologischer Garten station, take the RE1 regional train to Brandenburg an der Havel (about 1 hour)
  • Car: From Berlin via the B5, A10 and B1 to Brandenburg an der Havel (about 1.5 hours).

Tour description: The tour starts in Mühlendamm. There is a canoe rental and parking right there. There are several restaurants to fortify yourself before the tour. Off you go to the Brandenburg town canal. There are two small jetties on the town canal. The course leads past Paulikloster monastery, the State Archaeological Museum and Kirche Heilige Dreifaltigkeit Catholic church. Then you go through the town lock; the entrance then continues on to the right on Brandenburg’s Lower Havel (there are several ice-cream parlours on Steinstrasse which can be reached from the second canoe landing stage). On Brandenburg’s Lower Havel you can land in the town centre at the Jahrtausendbrücke Bridge at a café or the restaurant to the left of the bridge. Please note: there is bustling boat traffic here, including passenger boats. The tour continues on to Näthewinde. At the end of the Näthewinde at the a portage point (branch in the Näthewinde to the right after the Jahrtausendbrücke Bridge). Please note: Canoes can be transferred here using a boat trailer on rails. You have to pay a Euro 20 deposit at the nearby "An der Dominsel" restaurant! Alternatively, you can also carry the boat. Before you turn off from the Näthewinde, we recommend a detour to Domstreng to see the cathedral. From there, you head back to Mühlendamm.
