The Cathedral of St Mary that is located on a steep hill above the town island and the river Havel can be seen from afar, and it is an iconic landmark of the Elbe-Havel region. Premonstratensian monks built the church between 1150 and 1170 as a Romanesque basilica for the diocese of Havelberg. It was severely damaged by fire in 1279 and then converted in the Gothic style. Nowadays it is considered one of the oldest and most noteworthy churches in the northern part of Saxony-Anhalt. At first glance, the imposing structure resembles a fortress, as it does not have a typical church tower. Instead, its huge west front that has a brick façade interrupted by just a few windows and light slots, rises to a height of 33 metres. The church structure is rounded off by a flat-roofed three-nave basilica.

The entire building complex with its former additional buildings (priory, deanery, brewery, oast house, cathedral hospital, school and residences of the canons) attracts visitors who are interested in art and art history.

The cathedral and its former retreat with the cloister, chapter house, dormitory, refectory and cellar from the 12th to 15th century, bear witness to the region’s eventful history over the past more than 1,000 years. Inside the cathedral, the area for the priests and monks is separated from the rest of the church by means of a ceiling-high brick rood screen covered in reliefs and sculptures. The screen was completed in 1410, and the grave of the bishop Johannes Wöpelitz who had initiated its construction is located in the chancel, decorated with an exquisite alabaster image. The culture foundation for Saxony-Anhalt has been responsible for the cathedral’s structural preservation since 1996.

The Cathedral of St Mary is used by Havelberg’s protestant congregation. Mass is held at 10 a.m. on Sundays, in the cathedral itself in summer and in the heated paradise hall in winter.  On the website you will find information about further spiritual offerings, as well as about concerts and the option to book a tour of the cathedral.

The cathedral is quite rightfully referred to as a gem on the northern side of the Romanesque Road (“Strasse der Romantik”) and it has always been Havelberg’s most prominent landmark.
