In about 1160, a wooden church became the Late Romanesque cruciform pillar basilica built of stone and modelled on the Jerichower monastery church. From 1517 to 1562, it was converted into a three-nave Late Gothic hall church. At the end of April 1945, the church was bombed and caught fire. The church lost its tower. On July 22, 1945 the gable above the triumphal arch collapsed in a storm and also destroyed the roof of the choir. In 1972, the tower was taken down to the level of the clock because of structural defects. A new gallery was later installed. The Gothic altar shrine, whose tempera paintings on the sides date from 1360, was once the main altar. The choir window was fully replaced. Rathenow artist Gerhard Henschel created modern depictions of biblical themes. The result was reflections on biblical concepts, impressively formed of colour and light. Since September 17, 2001, St.-Marien-Andreas-Kirche church has had a new church steeple. The German Armed Forces helicopter succeeded in perfectly placing the “Kaiserstiel” or spire on the church steeple on the second attempt. The crew of the German Armed Forces helicopter received applause, handshakes and pats on the back from the people of Rathenow for this extraordinary feat. Alternating exhibitions can be seen in the choir.
