The old village church was demolished in 1982 for safety reasons — leaving a gap that shaped the village’s image and community life for decades. Then, an extraordinary idea took shape: an unused, dilapidated chapel from Kleinwudicke, 20 kilometers away, was dismantled piece by piece and faithfully rebuilt in Jerchel. What began as a “crazy idea” became reality through the dedication of the church congregation, a specially formed circle of friends, and many supporters — and was documented by the public broadcaster rbb in the film “A Village Church Moves.”

Today, the chapel is an open space for all generations — not only for worship services, but also for concerts, exhibitions, workshops, meditation sessions, children’s projects, and much more. In the summer months, it is open daily as a cycling route chapel, inviting visitors to pause, find silence — or take part in the weekly peace meditation.
