A brick church, farmers’ houses adorned with wooden beams, and a town hall built in a neo-Gothic style. It’s no wonder that the old town of Nauen and its many late-medieval buildings belong to Brandenburg’s 31 towns with a historic town centre. The only thing you won’t find here, strangely for a town with the amount of history that Nauen has, is a typical market square. Instead, between the town hall and the church you’ll find the old market street (Marktstrasse) that was once the scene of colourful hustle and bustle and of flourishing trade. A lot went on a few hundred metres away, too, when Hollywood came to the Neue Strasse. Quentin Tarantino’s team turned the buildings in Nauen’s old town into a French tavern for ‘Inglourious Basterds’,

while the filmmakers behind the US hit ‘Homeland’ also paid a visit to the long road over a large pond. In filming for the fifth season, the Barz’sche Haus on Martin-Luther-Platz was dressed up as a town hall and the building next to it became a post office where CIA agents exchange strictly confidential documents on their secret mission.

As well as action-packed Hollywood blockbusters, the town of Nauen has also been in the spotlight for German films and series. The state-owned East German film studio DEFA moved its filming to Nauen in the mid-Seventies. In 1974 Frank Beyer filmed an adaptation of the book ‘Jakob the Liar’, the only DEFA film ever nominated for an Oscar.

In the Netflix series hit Kleo, for example, the world's oldest broadcasting station, the Nauen radio station, makes a special appearance. The action thriller series starring Jella Haase started on Netflix in 2022. The concept comes from the HaRiBos (Hanno Hackfort, Richard Kropf, Bob Konrad), who are also showrunners and writers, and author Elena Senft.

There’s more than just historic cinematic sights to discover on a walk across the cobblestones of these alleys, however. Aside from experiences in film, Nauen is also worth visiting for the St. Jakobi town church and a pit stop at the salt cave to gather up some more energy.
