In the 19th century, the tree-lined promenade was developed in the style of a public park in honour of Alexander von Humboldt, with foreign trees and botanical signs. The pathways were changed and simplified in the 1920s and 1930s. Additional redesigns were carried out in the 1950s and 1960s after the park suffered severe damage during the war. The most striking alterations, such as the "frog pond", are now elements considered worth preserving. As part of the urban renovation programme and in preparation for the German National Garden Show, the Humboldthain Park was renovated as a special part of the inner-city green belt of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel. Since then, the area has been populated by many cute dog sculptures known as “Waldmöpsen“.
