Starting in Brandenburg an der Havel, the trail begins at the Grillendamm, following the road to Klein Kreutz. Beyond the village, the path leads through hedge-lined fields into the vast open landscape. After crossing the L911, a narrow trail winds through the untouched Katharinenbruch wetlands, later through woods and damp meadows until you reach Mötzow. The Domstiftsgut Mötzow estate, with its charming manor house, art mill, farm shop, petting zoo, and playground, is a popular stop for families and day-trippers.

Shaded by trees, the trail continues past the estate’s asparagus fields and berry plantations toward Lünow. Between Lünow and Ketzür, there’s a shortcut that allows you to divide the full loop into two separate stages.

At the upper part of the Beetzsee, the small Buhnenwerder gull island draws attention. An information board explains the history of this former breeding colony. Nestled in the rural Havelland landscape, the villages of Päwesin and Bagow are particularly picturesque. A rest on Bagower Mühlenberg rewards hikers with a stunning view over the Beetzsee and Riewendsee. Descending from the hill, you pass the site of an old sand pit, once used for construction sand. Beyond the hamlet of Vogelgesang, the trail leads through the Bagower Bruch, an area of old beech and oak forest. Here, parts of the route double as a nature education path circling the dreamy Bruchsee.

Closer to Gortz, the tree-lined paths turn into a blossoming tunnel of fruit trees in spring. After a short, sandy climb to Hasselberg, the horizon opens to Ketzür, marked by its striking post mill and notable village church. From here, the path continues via Butzow, hugging the western shore of the Beetzsee, with frequent, beautiful views of the water, until you reach Radewege. The final stretch back to the city center of Brandenburg alternates between road-side paths and quiet sections near the lakeshore.

Tip: For a two-day tour with an overnight stay in the “north”, hike the right-hand side of the lake chain first (approx. 27.4 km), and the left-hand side the following day (approx. 25.3 km).
