The windmill on Mühlenberg, above the village center of Bamme, was first documented in 1334 and is also mentioned in Charles IV's land register from 1375. In 1569, mill builder Joachim Glasern had the mill extensively rebuilt, as indicated by an inscription that has since been lost: "This mill was built in 1569 by Joachim Glasern. God is my comfort." Another inscription confirms that the mill was renovated in 1701 by mill builder Jacob Leuwe. Repair work took place, among other times, in the years 1747 and 1833.

After the mill was operated electrically for a few years, operations ceased in 1931, and the mill was handed over to the Rathenow Homeland and Museum Association. Extensive repairs were again carried out in 1988. The storm Kyrill, which caused significant damage in large parts of Europe on January 18 and 19, 2007, also inflicted considerable damage on the mill, including the destruction of the mill's wings.

In 2017, a comprehensive restoration began, aiming to preserve as many historical components as possible. Nevertheless, several deteriorated beams had to be replaced, including the flour beam, which was substituted with a new 4.50-meter-long oak beam from a roughly 280-year-old oak from Rathenow’s city forest. The mill housing was also dismantled and thoroughly renewed, and the mill received four new wings made of larch wood. The gear wheel was preserved thanks to the renewal of the gear teeth. After about fifteen months of construction, the mill was ceremoniously handed over in December 2018. Today, events and guided tours are held in and around the mill.
