The oldest preserved town gate in Brandenburg was started in about 1290 outside the palisade on the outward-facing side as a gate house with a drawbridge, and extended on the town side in around 1310. In about 1320, the two upper floors with crest-shaped apertures on the outer edge were completed. The lower floors of the tower could only be accessed from the battlements via the attic of the first upper floor.

After 1355, perhaps as a punishment for obeisance of “False Waldemar” - a fraudster who pretended to be the deceased margrave - the gate was closed, walled up as a dungeon and a vaulted gun chamber was installed above it. In 1911, the tower was broken through for the footpath. In 1945, Rathenower Torturm was hit by artillery fire. The tower was finally secured in 1996.

Rathenower Torturm, built as a defence to the north of Altstadt, forms an irregular rectangle. The 28 metre high structure has a pointed, conical roof, as did Plauer Torturm, a little to the side of the battlements. The town wall at Walther-Rathenau-Platz still extends to Rathenower Torturm.
