The euthanasia facility in Brandenburg an der Havel was one of the first in the T4 Campaign. The name referred to the address of the centre where the killing of the sick was planned, at Tiergartenstrasse 4 in Berlin. The site of the old prison in the middle of the town of Brandenburg, closed in 1931, was used for the first ‘test gassing’ of psychiatric patients in Germany using carbon monoxide. In 1940, SS doctors and institution workers killed more than 9000 ill and disabled people here, among them at least 900 Jewish patients. The victims were aged between two and 88 years old. First they were put together in surrounding clinics and then were taken by bus to the site of the killings in Brandenburg. The facility was closed again in October 1940. Despite the walls that surrounded the site, it was far from an ideal location to keep the killings – in the middle of a residential area – a secret. Most of the workers went straight onto its successor institution in Bernburg an der Saale, and some of them took part in the mass murder of Jews in the eastern territories using gas.

Since 2012 the old prison location in Brandenburg has been home to the Memorial for the Victims of the Euthanasia Killings in Brandenburg an der Havel, one of six documentary and educational institutions in Germany and Austria today that recall the institutions where the targeted killing of the sick took place. The site has a gas chamber, of which only the rear wall and foundations are still standing today.

An outdoor and permanent exhibition in the old prison’s former workshop building recall the place’s history, the crimes committed and the perpetrators, as well as the people who were murdered here. The individual stories of victims are told, but also biographies of perpetrators. Photos and written records are on display, both documenting and attempting to cover up the killings.
