A look back reveals the tremendous speed at which computers have developed. Albrecht Bohne heaves a removable disk out of a device. The imposing item measuring a good half metre in diameter with handles can store one megabyte. This disk was a real hit not even 25 years ago. Today, computer experts only grin slightly at such storage capacities. Hard drives can now store 180 gigabytes and more and are smaller than a cigarette carton.

At the computer museum at the Technical University of Brandenburg, the advances technology has made, particularly over the last quarter of a century, are clear even to a layman. One unique exhibit came from a former steelworks - a roller device for printer paper rolls. A works carpenter built it, a massive, seemingly antiquated fixture. Because there is not enough space, the exhibition only focuses on the development of computers in the GDR. Exhibits such as a massive laptop made in the west are the exceptions to this.
