The historic "Old Gardener's House," built around 1719, is the oldest surviving residential house in the entire region. This half-timbered house, which is almost entirely basemented, is located directly in the town center and served as the seat of the community for a long time.

Today, the Old Gardener's House has a kitchen, a former black kitchen currently used as a storage room, and six former living rooms. Two of these rooms are dedicated to an exhibition dealing with Romanticism and the life of Baron Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué, who spent 30 years of his life in Nennhausen.

In this house, his most famous work "Undine" was also created, which served as inspiration for Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" from Copenhagen and the American "Ariel."

The exhibition is maintained by the Nennhausen Cultural Association and is open to the public on Sundays during the summer months. Another room is used to offer guests coffee and cake.
