Here the River Havel meanders through several kilometres of unspoilt nature. The beautiful cut-off channels provide pretty side routes and provide a perfect place to spend some time anchored in peaceful bays. Expect moderate commercial shipping on the Unterer Havel waterway, where there are no more locks after Brandenburg an der Havel.

Length/Duration: 31 kilometres (1–2 days)

Start: Brandenburg an der Havel

Finish: Ketzin (Havel)

How to get there:

  • Public transport: Take the RE1 from Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof) to Brandenburg an der Havel (about 1 hour).
  • Car: From Berlin along the A115, A10, A2 and the B102 to Brandenburg an der Havel (around 1 hour).

Route: Brandenburg an der Havel, Klein Kreutz, Deetz, Trebelsee, Ketzin (Havel)

On-shore outings:

  • Brandenburg an der Havel: Historic town centres (Old Town, New Town and Cathedral Island)
  • Deetz: Medieval fieldstone church, walk along the burrows, Mühlenrundwanderweg (circular hiking trail) with a view from the Mühlenberg hill
  • Ketzin: Historic town with twisting alleys in the fishing quarter and a beautiful lakeside promenade

nautical information: Please note: The suburban lock in Brandenburg an der Havel is used for commercial shipping. Please dock on the right here and announce your arrival over the intercom system. Lake Trebelsee: The commercial shipping lane goes through the middle of the lake. In the northern part there is a water-skiing and kitesurfing route. In the eastern part the water depth is predominantly between 1.5 and 2 metres. If there are strong waves, particularly through southwesterly winds, special attention is recommended.

Small rafts up to 2.70 metres in height can use the urban lock starting from the Jahrtausendbrücke bridge in Brandenburg an der Havel. Sail downstream a little on Brandenburg’s Niederhavel river and then turn left into the town canal (Stadtkanal). Larger rafts should sail upstream via Lake Kleiner Beetzsee and then turn right on the Silo Canal into the suburban lock.

Never sailed before? Our rafts are mostly very manoeuvrable and easy to handle even for people without much experience. You should still observe the following:
  • Leave sufficient space from other boats for your first parking manoeuvres.
  • Wait until you’ve got a bit of experience sailing the raft before you go through your first lock.
  • Don’t sail at wind speeds higher than 4.
  • Rafts with more than 15 horsepower require a licence and charter certificate.

Licence: not required
