From open-cast mine to local recreational oasis - the Lusatian Lakeland, Europe's largest artificial water landscape, was created as a result of the extensive open-cast lignite mining in Lusatia. But even before industrialisation, the region was very important as a contested border area between Saxony and Prussia. Impressive castles, manor houses and historic parks and gardens along the picturesque lake landscape - discover the hidden treasures of the region on the cycle tour. Enjoy the fantastic insights into almost forgotten eras.

On your journey through the idyllic landscape of the Lusatian Lakeland, you will visit Senftenberg Fortress. Fierce battles were fought here in the days when Senftenberg still belonged to Saxony. The museum, which has been housed in the castle for over 100 years, tells you about all this and much more.

in the castle for over 100 years. Along Lake Senftenberg, you will reach the typical regional, historic estate with manor house and outbuildings in Schwarzbach. Continue to Guteborn. Take a relaxing break at the ‘Vergissmeinicht’ café and guesthouse. History was also made here at the former castle when the last Saxon king, Friedrich August II, abdicated here at the end of the November Revolution in 1918.

For culture enthusiasts and frequent cyclists who want to delve even deeper into the history of this bygone world, the cycle tour can continue for almost 32 kilometres. This takes you through a former border area that was heavily contested by the Mark Meissen and Upper and Lower Lusatia around the year 1200. Border defences were built, from which Großkmehlen Castle developed on the Meissen side of the Pulsnitz and Lindenau Castle on the opposite side in Upper Lusatia.
