Around 400 lakes characterise the Lower Lusatia region and give it a character all of its own. Part of this landscape is closely linked to the historical extraction of lignite, clay and glass sand, which began around 170 years ago – due to the specific geological conditions, this took place close to the surface and had a lasting impact on the region.

Glassworks, ironworks, ceramic factories and potteries were symbols of a vibrant industrial history and supplied products that were in demand far beyond the region.

On the Old Mining Tour near the glassmaking town of Döbern, cyclists encounter impressive reminders of this mining and industrial history. At the same time, it shows how the former mining areas have been transformed into a varied landscape of heathland, woodland and water.

The route passes through nature and landscape conservation areas as well as the UNESCO Muskauer Faltenbogen Global Geopark. Numerous information boards along the way provide fascinating insights into the geological features of this unique region.
