Few villages can match Horno for the marks left behind by lignite mining in the Lausitz region. The new Horno, a town district of Forst (Lausitz), came about for the most part from the settlements of the residents of the former village, which finally gave away to the surface mining in Jänschwalde in 2005. Parts of the old village church were also taken away, including the curved tower cowl that today crowns the top of the new church. For around 500 years it sat atop the old fieldstone church in Horno. The new church was constructed in the village centre of the new Horno in 2003.

The baptismal font also comes from the old church. The two old bells that call worshippers to prayer are now accompanied by a new bell cast in Lauchhammer’s art foundry (Oberspreewald-Lausitz). The church features the “Church Information and Meeting Centre” with a wealth of information about the church parishes in Oberlausitz and Niederlausitz affected by the mining industry. The highlights of the new church’s interior include its glass apsis, which bathes the sanctuary in blue light.

The church is part of the “Open Churches” initiative, and is open on Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Visits can also be arranged at other times if booked in advance with Sybille Kutzscher (telephone +49 175 8768170) or Ms Handreck, An der Dorfaue 6 (telephone +49 3562 690984).
