Anyone standing at the foot of the disused F60 conveyor bridge in the visitor mine near Lichterfeld invariably tries to imagine what this giant must have looked like in action. To experience it in real life, however, no time machine is needed. Simply head to the active Welzow-Süd surface mine around 30 kilometres east of the visitor mine instead, where an identical conveyor bridge is still in operation. There the engineering colossus can be viewed during visitor tours with the crew transport vehicle or off-road vehicles, or from a viewpoint. Either way, it’s a spectacular sight.

The F60 roars continuously, and does a tremendous job. It removes the overburden on one side of the surface mine and transports it half a kilometre across the open pit to the other side for dumping. Beneath the conveyor bridge, five excavators mine the lignite, which lies 90 to 130 metres underground. The interplay of the excavator and conveyor bridge seems precisely choreographed.

The “Welzow Window” surface mine viewpoint is located on the eastern edge of the town of Welzow. A signposted turn-off from Eintrachtallee shows the way to it. From the viewpoint there is a unique view of the active surface lignite mine. Here you will find information on geology, coal mining technology and tourist attractions in the town of Welzow. The viewing platform is also accessible to guests with reduced mobility.

And those who want to get closer can book a tour in the crew transport vehicle to the gigantic machine – including a picnic in the surface mine. The excursio Visitor Centre in Welzow’s former railway station provides information about these and all the other exciting adventure offers relating to active surface mining.

Tip: Watch the multimedia film “80 years of landscape transformation in 8 minutes” at the excursio Visitor Centre to get in the mood for your visit. And then your mining adventure will begin!
