King Frederick William IV himself initiated the construction of the small chapel in the historic central area of what is now Babelsberg. He erected a central building on the village green which was modelled on a medieval church. The detailed design dating back to 1844 was created by Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse in collaboration with Christian Heinrich Ziller. The church was consecrated on January 30, 1853.

During the Second World War, the octagon was damaged by shock waves and bomb fragments. Since the roof was on the brink of collapse, it was removed in 1975; shortly afterwards, the vault collapsed, too. From 1978 onwards the ruin was in the possession of the city. It was supposed to make way for a multi-lane road, but this was prevented by a citizen’s initiative.

The friends’ association Förderverein Alte Neuendorfer Kirche und Neuendorfer Anger e.V. has taken care of the monument since 1995. During reconstruction, the financial burden was spread across as many shoulders as possible. It was possible to reduce the individual funding amounts required by separating the reconstruction process into numerous short phases. The basis was provided by one hundred per cent financing of the roof through urban planning funding.

Neuendorf church achieved recognition in the 2009 Brandenburg Awards for Monument Preservation. It is part of the Historic Parcours of the state capital Potsdam. Thr parcours provides short and concise information about historical buildings and Potsdam´s history for guests and Potsdamers.
