August Stüler delivered the preliminary design that was improved by Wilhelm Salzenberg. It includes Byzantine and Romanesque architectural elements. King Frederick William IV sent Wilhelm Salzenburg to Italy in 1846 and to Constantinople in 1847/48 in order to study the Romanesque and Byzantine architectures.

The church houses precious objects from the previous Catholic church of the 18th century: three altarpieces by Antoine Pesne dating back to 1723 and 1739 as well as elaborate wrought silver and a crucifixion group by Peter Benckert. Pesne and Benckert used to be highly estimated artists of Potsdam Rococo. The organ with 41 stops was built by Schuke in 1936.

The Potsdam Catholic parish counts about 8000 members.
