Friedrichskirche stands at the centre of the Weavers’ Quarter. Prussian King Frederick II gave the order to build the church for the Bohemian settlers on the square in the middle of the Weavers’ Colony of Nowawes, which was established in 1751. The octagonal, elongated church structure with a steep hipped roof and striking west tower was erected in 1752/53 based on plans by Amsterdam master builder Jan Bouman, who directed construction of the Dutch Quarter. From 1850-1852, Christian Heinrich Ziller carried out numerous alterations, such as a redesign of the windows as neo-Romanesque arched windows, replacement of the wooden roofing of the spire with slate, and a structuring of the church spire. In 1911 the sacristy was added to the east side of the church.

Inside the nave, simple two-storey wooden porches line the hall. The galleries are supported by eight columns made of whole tree trunks. On the gallery above the entrance, there is a classicistically designed organ case which was created by Carl Ludwig Gesell in 1852. Today’s organ has 22 stops and was installed in 1913 by Potsdam organ-building company Alexander Schuke, who also carried out alteration work on it in 1953.

Up until 1809, services were also held for the Bohemian weavers in Czech. In the last years of Communist rule in East Germany, the opposition movement met regularly at Friedrichskirche. It was also here that Potsdam´s New Forum was founded.

In 2016 the colour scheme of the interior was renewed in accordance with the original design of 1852.
