Luisenplatz was built together with the city wall as part of the city’s second expansion phase around 1733, initially as a timber collection point. In 1854, a layout for Luisenplatz was designed by the garden artist and the general director of the Royal Prussian Gardens Peter Joseph Lenné and it was fitted with a fountain. In 1939, the square was paved and most of the trees, except for a few cypress oaks, were removed to create a parking lot.

During the GDR era, the square was used for public festivals and Christmas markets for many years. It was named “Brandenburger Platz” in 1945 and “Platz der Nationen” in 1951 and in 1991 renamed Luisenplatz again.

Preparing the Federal Garden Show in Potsdam in 2001 the square was redesigned, both underground with the construction of an underground car park to replace the car parks established in the 1930s and above ground by planting rows of lime trees. Since then, the middle of the square has again been adorned with a basin and fountain, as it was already included in Lenné's gardens in 1855. As such, the current design is a reinterpretation of Lenné's original designs of 1854.

There are various restaurants and cafés on Luisenplatz. Every year, smaller city festivals such as the Luisenfest and markets as well as a part of Potsdam's Christmas market are held on Luisenplatz.
