In 1794, Frederick William II of Prussia had a rural pleasure palace built on Pfaueninsel (“Peacock Island”) for himself and his mistress Wilhelmine Encke, who later became Countess Lichtenau. Under Frederick William II, the immediate surroundings of the palace were landscaped and a neo-Gothic dairy – the Meierei – was built on the opposite end of the island. Frederick William III and his wife Queen Luise used the palace as a summer residence. From 1818 onwards, Peter Joseph Lenné was commissioned to redesign the island to create a landscape garden.

Pfaueninsel Island can be reached by ferry all year round, while the Meierei is open to visitors during the summer season. The palace is closed for restoration work.
