Under Frederick William II, the immediate surroundings of the palace were landscaped and a neo-Gothic dairy – the "Meierei" – was built on the opposite end of the island. Frederick William III and his wife Queen Luise used the palace as a summer residence. From 1818 onwards, Peter Joseph Lenné was commissioned to redesign the island to create a landscape garden.

Peacock Island is accessible by ferry all year round. The palace is open to visitors during the summer season. The dairy is open on selected days during the summer season.
