Wittstock lost its reputation as being impregnable in the Thirty Years’ War. The imposing town wall, however, offered protection from enemies and geographically separated the town from the surrounding area. The town gates also provided an ideal opportunity for collecting taxes, so that the "fiscal" function of the town wall was the priority until the flour and slaughter tax was abolished in 1867. The wall had to be well maintained. In the time of King Frederick II, a short section of the town wall in the west of the town, near "Am Wolfsloch", was provided with large relief arches. With the exception of two town gates, the town wall has been fully preserved to this day.

The heyday of cloth weaving

A large fire broke out within the walls of Wittstock in 1716. After the reconstruction of the city, the cloth weaving factory flourished again. Colonists from Württemberg and the Palatinate were settled in and around Wittstock in 1750 under Frederick II to compensate for the population losses of the previous decades.
