The lock is part of the Lychener Waterway. It equalises the water level at Lake Stolpsee, which is part of the Obere Havel Federal Waterway (OHW). The first lock was built here in 1752 when the River Woblitz was made navigable. From 1779 to 1782, the lock was built according to Finow baysize and rebuilt in 1976. It is a self-service lock and is managed by the Waterways and Shipping Office Eberswalde.
