The film-making couple Barbara and Winfried Junge followed 18 Golzow children from starting school into the time after German Reunification, linking their personal biographies with everyday life in the GDR and the course of German Post-War history. It was following a recommendation by the then District Education Officer of Frankfurt (Oder) that the decision was made to choose Golzow for the documentary. Film-maker Winfried Junge recalls that a new central school had just been opened in the village, replacing the small village schools and providing the surrounding villages with a ten-class school education system. Over the period from 1961 to 2005, the long-term documentary provided some telling insights into their personal life stories, with all the events and crises undergone by typical GDR families, into the time when they became Federal German citizens.

Some visitors to the “Children of Golzow” documentation centre in the village will undoubtedly draw close parallels with their own biographies. Even now, this makes this documentary a living milestone in film history and in the history of real lives.
