“On the trail of the Ice Age” could be the motto of this cycle tour when you get on the saddle in Erkner and set off on the circular route through the landscape of the Erkner, Grünheide (Mark), Kagel, Kienbaum, Hangelsberg and Spreetal regions, which was shaped by the Ice Age. 18,000 years ago, it created a varied natural landscape of valleys, gorges and scree fields, which this tour leads past many lakes, forests and meadows along the course of the Spree.

Start / Finish: Erkner S-Bahn station

Path condition / route construction: predominantly asphalted surface

Route description

The contrasting route leads from Erkner through Grünheider Forst and offers nature lovers plenty of open countryside and beautiful views of the water.

If you prefer a more leisurely ride, follow the route from Kienbaum along a quiet, shady country road to Hangelsberg, where you can join the Spree Cycle Path and return to Erkner.

A special feature of Hangelsberg is the mass occurrence of lily of the valley over an area of several hundred hectares in the surrounding woods. This occurrence of lily of the valley is one of the largest in Europe and surprises visitors in spring with a sea of lilies of the valley, which particularly love this location.

Alternative route

If you prefer something a little more sporty, you can cycle the entire 70-kilometre tour from Kienbaum to Trebus and reach the Spree cycle path via Fürstenwalde/Spree. You can get a particularly good idea of the Ice Age in the hollow of Lake Trebus. The museum in Fürstenwalde/Spree houses the largest collection of glacial boulders in Brandenburg in its outdoor area. Those interested in geology can obtain scientific explanations of the glacial processes in the region.

Worth seeing:

  • Erkner lido
  • Museum farm at Sonnenluch
  • Woltersdorf lock
  • Kutzker shipping company
  • Canoeing on the Spree
  • Tourist information Grünheide (Mark)

Refreshment tips:

  • Holly's Gallery Café
  • DEKAFFEE Roastery
