After staying the night on one of the four campsites on Lake Neuendorfer See, you start a not very long but all the more interesting observation tour towards Werder. You first cross the lake to Alt Schadow, where you can buy smoked fish from the local fisherman. There are various nature reserves behind the lock on both sides of the Spree. Winding oxbow lakes on the left afford views of large meadows as well as oak, floodplain and moorland forests. They are important hideaways for otters and rare bird species. Filled with impressions of the day, you can then spend the night at the waterway rest area in the tranquil town of Werder.

The next day you continue to follow the current of the Spree in calm waters, providing you with ample opportunity to explore the picturesque landscape with beaver’s lodges, stork nests and rare birds such as the kingfisher or the great reed warbler. Then you reach the fully automatic lock at Kossenblatt. You continue this relaxing tour in the direction of Trebatsch, which is within easy reach by canoe.

If you have never seen Brandenburg’s largest lake, Lake Schwielochsee, then a detour is highly recommended. There you find many leisure facilities such as campsites and bathing areas.

Length/duration: 24 kilometres (1-2 days)

Start: Neuendorf am See

Finish: Trebatsch

How to get there: From Berlin central station, take the RE2 (Cottbus) to Königs Wusterhausen. From here, take bus no. 725 to Neuendorf am See (about 2 hours). Return journey: From Trebatsch, take bus no. 404 to Beeskow. From here, continue with the RB36 to Königs Wusterhausen and then the RE2 (Wismar) to Berlin central station (around 3 hours).

Detour: Lake Schwielochsee

On-shore outings:
  • Briescht: Drawbridge, former Royal Forestry

Nautical information: Easy and family-friendly. Please note that only water sections not marked with a no-entry sign are navigable, so as not to disturb the animals.
