The tower of the parish church of St. Nicholas rises high, standing out clearly from the rest of the Bad Freienwalde townscape. Visitors are quick to notice the 13th century building with its red brick architecture – the town's oldest structure. This listed late Gothic church stands at the centre of Bad Freienwalde. Located on the triangular market square, the church has a history that goes back to the foundation of the town itself. Since then, the building has been renovated numerous times, including the church tower, which has naturally attracted many bolts of lightning. And St. Nicholas seems to have a magnetic effect on the film industry, too. Just recently, in the winter of 2019, the night sky was brightly illuminated when a film crew of more than 70 people and five trucks used the town church as a backdrop:

actor and director Detlev Buck returned to Brandenburg to shoot his film Wir können nicht anders. Numerous German movie stars gathered to complete shooting of the film in and around the church in Bad Freienwalde. Somewhere between a thriller, drama and comedy, the film tells the story of Samuel and Edda, who are travelling in their camper van to celebrate Edda's father's 60th birthday. When they get there, the two get caught up in a jealousy drama in which Samuel interferes, swiftly resulting in further escalation.

Just a few kilometres away in Grüntal, Detlev Buck shot a road movie called Wir können auch anders in the early nineties – a film that is even used as teaching material in secondary schools nowadays. With touch of satire, the film revolves around the situation in East Germany immediately after reunification. The two West German brothers Rudi and Moritz inherit their grandmother’s house and meet up with all kinds of memorable characters as they travel there, eventually ending up in a small village in Brandenburg.

After visiting the church of St. Nicholas, the spa gardens of Bad Freienwalde are the perfect place for an extended work. Designed by Peter Joseph Lenné at the end of the 18th century, the landscape park has been a place of peace and relaxation ever since. In terms of active leisure options there are bicycle tours through the scenic Oderbruch, followed by a stop at the fascinating Fontanehaus Schiffmühle. This is where author Theodor Fontane’s father spent the last 15 years of his life, and Fontane himself often visited the house.

Wir können auch anders
  • Genre: Comedy
  • Description: The film takes a satirical look at the upheavals in East Germany after the political turnaround in 1989. Two West German illiterates – the brothers Rudi and Moritz Kipp (“Kipp” and “Most”) – drive an old Hanomag L 28 flatbed truck to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania where they have inherited their grandmother’s house. Since they can’t decipher the road maps and signs, and the car is not just slow but has technical problems too, the journey takes longer than expected.
  • Directed by: Detlev Buck
  • Country of production: Germany
  • Distributor/broadcaster: Boje Buck Produktion GmbH
  • Cast: Joachim Król, Horst Krause
