Replenished by the rivers Schlaube and Planfließ, Lake Großer Treppelsee lies embedded in the dense forest of the Schlaubetal Nature Park. Stretching for at least 2 kilometres, the lake is divided into three sections from the north: the first basin, central lake and second basin. All these together have a surface area of 76 hectares. At 3.5 metres, Lake Großer Treppelsee is not particularly deep. The fish population is highly interesting both in terms of species diversity and the size of the fish you can expect to catch. The main species here are eel, perch, pike, carp, tench, catfish and zander and there are plenty of whitefish, too. However, thick vegetation makes fishing from the shore difficult in many places. Boat anglers have better conditions here.

Carps weighing up to 40 pounds have been caught in Lake Großer Treppelsee. Carp (and tench) frequently swim to the extensive belts of reeds and water lilies. As a former fish farm for grass carp, there are also a small number of large specimens remaining. Catfish can also be caught in this forest lake. The largest known specimen weighed more than 80 pounds! Other lakes nearby can’t compete with this – a real gem.
  • Size/depth: 76 hectares, 3.5 metres
  • Tenant/operator: Fischerbetrieb Karl-Heinz Weidner, Seeweg 18, 15299 Grunow-Dammendorf
  • Fish species: eel, perch, pike, carp, tench, catfish, zander, whitefish
  • Sale of fishing permits: From the tenant

Pike are not quite so numerous, but the quota of predators measuring more than metre in length is very good. The same goes for zander: they’re not easy to catch, but you can always count on a double digit haul. The twilight and night hours are particularly suitable here. With an additional night fishing permit, you can fish to your heart’s content through the hours of darkness.

In the south-east of the lake, the natural campsite “Großer Treppelsee” offers numerous pitches for tents, caravans and campers – an excellent way to combine fishing and camping in the forest.
