The Altfriedland ponds are one of the best birdwatching areas in the Oder-Spree lake district. With over 120 recorded bird species, they are worth a visit all year round. The extensive expanses of water, reed beds and alder swamp forests provide a habitat for numerous water birds, birds of prey and songbirds. The area is particularly busy during the migration periods in spring and fall.

Start / Finish: Altfriedland, Fischerstraße

Length / Duration: 6 kilometers, 1.5 hours

Nature of the path / route: partly loose ground, partly paved paths

Course: Altfreidland, reservoir, Kietzer See, Stobber, Klostersee, carp pond, Altfriedland

Route description

The tour starts in Altfriedland, from where a road leads north. At the edge of the village, a dirt track branches off to the right and leads to the observation pulpit at Kietzer See. The first birds can already be spotted here: Small and great spotted woodpeckers are active all year round in the alder forests along the path. In winter, large flocks of siskins gather here, while in spring and summer, songbirds give their concert.

After about 300 meters, Lake Kietz comes into view and the path continues north along the Stobber. After a short time, you reach the first observation hut at the edge of the forest with a wonderful view over the lake. Greylag geese can be seen here at any time of year, moulting in large numbers in late summer. Great crested grebes and red-necked grebes can also be seen regularly. In the summer months, common terns can be spotted with their graceful flight and deeply forked tails. During migration, many waders use the shallow sandbanks as a resting place. Cormorants, grey herons and great egrets can almost always be seen here.

Another highlight is located further north: a second, lower observation hut offers an even better view of the water areas. Various duck species such as mallards, teals, gadwalls, shovelers and goldeneyes are particularly easy to observe here. In the summer months, ospreys circle over the lake in search of prey, while the majestic sea eagles are present all year round.

There are two options from here:
  • If you prefer a shorter tour, you can turn back here.
  • If you want to extend the tour, follow the Stobber further north to the state road 34, where you turn left along the road for about 500 meters before a small path branches off to the south. This leads through a varied landscape to the Klostersee lake, where little mergansers and goosanders forage in the winter months. The path finally leads back to Altfriedland along the western shore of the lake.

Additional tips:

  • Best time: Particularly worthwhile during the migration periods in spring and fall.

  • Equipment: Binoculars or spotting scope for optimal observations.

  • Nature tours: Naturwacht Brandenburg offers excursions to the areas of the Altfriedland ponds that are not open to the public.

  • Refreshments: The Klosterschänke Altfriedland invites you to take a break in the summer months. There are other places to eat and drink in Neuhardenberg.
