Route description

Today's nature reserve “Reicherskreuzer Heide and Schwansee” extends over 2,840 hectares and was a military training area of the Soviet armed forces in Germany until 1992. Today it belongs to the Schlaubetal Nature Park and is a unique retreat for numerous bird species.

The tour begins at the observation tower on the Reicherskreuz - Pinnow road, which can be reached from a parking lot in Henzendorf. From here you can already enjoy a wide view over the heathland. In May, a particularly large number of birds can be observed, including woodcock, which fly along the edge of the forest with their characteristic “croaking” call. The soft cooing of the now rare turtle dove can also often be heard here.

On the way through the heath, hoopoes appear again and again, while woodlarks and tree pipits sing on the few bushes and trees. Shortly before nightfall, the fascinating spectacle of the nightjars begins. Their buzzing call can be heard from afar before they glide silently over the heath. Especially along the road between Reicherskreuz and Pinnow, these nocturnal birds can be observed mating and hunting for insects.

Best observation times

  • May to July: Evening hours for nightjars, turtle doves and woodlarks

  • Early summer: hoopoes and tree pipits along the heathland paths
